Ploiesti municipality, residence of Prahova County, is situated 60 km away from Bucharest, on the exceptional geographical coordinates, being crossed by the 26th degrees meridian, which divides the European continent in aproximately two equal parts, and the north part stretching almost near the 45th degrees parallel, elements which determine the temperate - continental aspect of the climate.
Emerging in an ancient oak forest, the place benefited in the beginning by the softening of the climate,by a natural protection and by rich rivers.When the people began practicing agriculture by cutting down the old oaks they found a brown forest soil, appropriate for their work.
The actual area of Ploiesti is of over 50 square km.Its neighbours are: Baicoi and Blejoi in the north; Barcanesti and Brazi in the south; Negoiesti and Targsorul Vechi in the west and Bucov and Berceni in the east. The aspect of the soil and the subsoil is determined by the city's location on the structure of the old dejection cone of Prahova River.
Ploiesti is situated near the famous wine - growing region Dealu Mare - Valea Calugareasca and has direct access to Prahova Valley, the most important area of mountainous tourism in Romania.
It is also an important road and railway centre which makes the connection with other important cities as: Bucharest, Brasov, Buzau, Targoviste, Urziceni, Valenii de Munte and Slanic.Ploiesti is the capital of Prahova county, the county with the largest population in Romania (almost 900 000 inhabitants) who live in 100 towns.
The county has a high standard of urbanization, having 2 municipalities and 12 cities, with a high degree of industrialization and diversification of activity. Apart from the mineral oil industry and mineral oil equipment which deal with geological research, drilling, extraction and refinig there are also factories of soft mechanics, chemical factories, tyres and rubber products factories, military technique, tourism (Prahova Valley), food industry, light industry and agriculture. In the county there exists one of the country's important vineyard (Dealu Mare) as well as the National Institute of Vineyard and Wine.
